Supply Chain Planning Software Will Improve Your Operations

If someone handed you a warm, fresh baked cookie, would you think about the process that resulted in the cookie? A pile of ingredients doesn’t just turn into a yummy treat. The process of making cookies starts much earlier than you might think. Wheat had to be planted, harvested, and then ground into flour. Chickens had to be hatched, raised, and then cared for in order to procure eggs. Sugarcane was grown, harvested, and then cane juice was extracted, purified, filtered, and crystalized into sugar. Let’s not get started on the many other ingredients and their origins.

Now you might be craving something sweet, and you’re probably wondering why different ingredients and their processes are being discussed. Just wait, this relates to supply chain planning software.

Simply put, supply chain is a process where different components are involved in producing a product or service. Supply chain involves everything from the very beginning to the end result, like following the journey of a wheat kernel all the way to a freshly baked cookie. Supply chain components can include organizations, people, activities, information, and other resources. This process of production and logistics has the potential to greatly benefit companies that implement supply chain management software.

Who has an effective supply chain?

It’s no secret that FedEx and UPS are competitors. They are both in the business of providing industry leading logistics, transportation, and other services. In order to stay in the game, both FedEx and UPS are constantly striving to make adjustments that will improve their operations. Supply chain planning tools are invaluable to these companies.

Before technology was advanced enough, UPS trained workers to memorize the different routes drivers took. Things are completely different today. UPS is constantly striving for improvement, and they implement supply chain management software. UPS workers are constantly being watched because time is money. Over the course of a year, one minute per driver per day adds up to $14.5 million. One minute of idle time per driver per day adds up to $500,000 in fuel by the end of the year. Being aware of these facts allows UPS to make decisions and regulate their employees’ productivity in a financially beneficial way.

Workers are trained to act with urgency. Your local UPS delivery person most likely has well over 100 stops to make each day, so if you see them, they try to be polite while getting back on their route as quickly as possible. UPS is tracking how long they take, how much they reverse the car, and even their left turns. Through tracking their drivers intensely, UPS learned that a lot of time was spent in idle waiting for left turns. Not only are drivers encouraged to make right turn loops, but routes are usually designed to avoid left turns. Since 2004 UPS reports this change has saved 100 million gallons of gas.

Like UPS, FedEx is seeking for ways to be faster and better. The core values of FedEx are flexibility, honesty, and value for money. Once a package is unloaded at a warehouse, FedEx really doesn’t want to touch it again until it is at the loading point. Packages move down a conveyer belt and are scanned by machines around 13 times! FedEx acknowledges that their customers don’t care about weather conditions or special circumstances, they just want their package as soon as they can get it. FedEx uses supply chain management software to ensure they are prepared to adapt and innovate to different situations that arise. They even have the ability to track the location, temperature, and light exposure to a package.

FedEx and UPS are really big corporations, but supply planning software can be utilized by companies of all types and sizes. Supply chain management leads to an elimination of waste, which in turn saves money. This is something that most, if not all, small businesses could benefit from. Having more efficient practices for different elements of your supply chain is a sure way to improve your company. Running more smoothly and saving money sounds pretty great!

Let’s think back to the process of making cookies. There are a lot of ingredients in your typical recipe, just like the different parts of your supply chain. Each of these elements influences the outcome of the cookies. Even though a recipe may call for less than a teaspoon of salt, leaving it out will negatively affect an entire batch of cookies. Some people spend years perfecting their chocolate chip cookie recipe, and they keep it a coveted secret once it’s perfect.
